The wheels started life as two-piece 1957 Chevy dump truck wheels, which originally featured a lock ring. Drayton and James cut out the centers and machined them to the correct size. Then, they welded new hoops to the centers, which allowed them to place the backspacing exactly where it needs to be for perfect fitment. Notice the extreme backspacing in the front wheels to bring the front tires in for plenty of turning clearance, while the rear wheel centersections are positioned for a deep-dish look. The front wheels measure 20×9 and feature Toyo 275/45R20 tires while the rears come in at 20×10 and mount to 275/60R20 Goodyear tires.

There’s plenty of stickers to go around, with two very large sticker sheets. While most of them make sense even if I do prefer printing, some seem unnecessary. In fact, one of the roof stickers is pure white, placed on a white piece. Its only function seems to be to hide a bit of texture on the panel and to make it match the other three roof panels. The instruction manual dives straight into the build with no special features, though there is a spread at the end of the booklet matching the Technic model against the real car (it’s a much closer match than the perspective on the curved page makes it appear).

TU means Technical Update, and the 330i’s engine is getting one. It remains a two-liter four-cylinder and gains 7 hp and 37 lb-ft of torque (for 255 hp and 295 lb-ft total), but most of the changes are for efficiency and simplicity. For example, there is now a single, simplex timing chain for the cams, the accessory belt drive has been simplified, and the crankshaft has been lightened. The direct injection system pressure has been raised from 200 to 350 bar, and the injectors can now perform multiple injections for reduced particulate emissions at low revs. The electrically actuated wastegate can open wider for more even heat distribution on the catalytic converter, assisting with warmup. EPA results aren’t yet in, but expect the G20–which has a lower drag coefficient (0.26 versus 0.29) than the F30–to achieve better fuel economy.

The 21LC1050’s hoist cable is just 20 mm in diameter, enabling the drums to have a high cable capacity. The standard hoist is a 65 kW mechanism with the capacity for 720 metres of cable. It can reach speeds of up to 166 metres per minute in the 25 t and 37.5 t versions of the crane and 83 metres per minute in the 50 t version. For projects in which it is necessary to reach speeds of up to 300 metres per minute, 110 kW and 132 kW are available. In addition, drums can be issued with Lebus drums with a capacity for 1,570 metres of cable.
