While the VW-powered Formula Junior didn’t work out as planned, but it did set the course for the formal Formula Vee classification. Built around the specifications for a standard 1963 Type 1 Beetle, the rules restricted the powerplant to the 1200 cc version of the air-cooled flat four engine. Because the Type 1 is consists of a “pan” with a central backbone or tunnel, the car ultimately acts as a donor for its driveline and suspension, but little else.
Another neat feature is load floating, which keeps the brake open for a short while after each move, to prevent repeated brake closures if the operator makes a series of short movements—thereby extending brake life.
